I'm doing my first full restoration of a '75 Vespa GTR 125, basically the same as a Sprint and Rally. I hear that a 12v electronic ignition conversion is a really sensible mod for reliability, but I'm not sure what's involved in converting to it, plus my books and manuals focus on the original set-up. I can see kits etc available from SIP (where I'm often getting parts from) but as a newbie to it 'I don't know what I don't know'. I can learn pretty quickly, but could use a simple overview of what's involved, the parts needed/effected, and any tips from anyone who's done it.

Thanks all

Yup, basically the same - large frame, 10" wheels etc, just a 125cc bore and lower gearing to match the European regs of the time.

Yeah. The same EXCEPT where it matters: Ignition. Different crankshaft, different ignition.

Get the MBD ignition like that guy says.

Do you have to put together a few parts to make up all you need?

Yes.

Call up MB Developments, ask for Broadhurst and tell him you need part number BGM6661. It is the kit for Vespa Sprint150 (VLB1T), Sprint Veloce, GT125 (VNL2T), GTR125 (VNL2T), Super, GL150 (VLA1T), VNA, VBA, VNB, and VBBs. It comes with a 1900g EI Flywheel, BGM 12v 120w PX Stator, Rear Brake Switch, Flywheel Nut, Bracket, Flywheel Removal Tool, and BGM Regulator (retails for 229,-euro + vat). Also, you need the accompanying wiring harness, part number 9077011 from BGM. It is made for those kits as it allows you to use the PX EFL stator with blue/black wire out in a pre-PX bike. I use it in my smallframe.

Cool, thanks Travis

Found it on the MBD site by searching that part no. They're showing no stock, but a £209 retail to me. The wiring harness didn't come up on a part code. I'll get in touch with them when I come to need it.

What's it like to fit? Any tips? (newbie level!)

Also wondering whether that £200+ is best put to this kit or to a PX or P engine instead...?
